Recompose

Recompose is a compost-based renewal system, which gives those who've passed the opportunity to give back to the earth. At the heart of the project is a three-story core, within which bodies and carbon-rich materials are placed.

Over the span of several months, with the help of aerobic decomposition and microbial activity, the bodies decompose fully, leaving a rich compost, which adds life to the plant-life in the facility's memorial grove, and is also made available to the community to enrich their home gardens.

Recompose is not simply a system for turning our bodies into soil-building material. It is also a space for the contemplation of our place in the natural world, and a ritual to help us say goodbye to our loved ones by connecting us with the cycles of nature.

Andrew is particularly passionate about this specific area of interest, and has registered his own name for a similar concept still to come in Australia, called 'Drop Dead Funerals', composting the deceased.
